The Carnegie School of Home Economics on Tuesday launched three new programmes, which can help create employment opportunities in the tourism and oil sector.

These are Care for the Elderly, Childcare Management, and Housekeeping.

President of the Tourism Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mitra Ramkumar, in his remarks, explained that the housekeeping career has great potential.

“As we emerge as an oil and gas economy, tourism is going to employ the vulnerable in our society…if we are to look at the value of a housekeeper in the hotel sector, we have a number of repeat guests that come to boutique hotels and lodges. If you ask what is the reason for repeating, it is because of housekeeping and the way they were treated”, he said.

He added that the housekeeping duty is of tremendous value and it should not be seen as a job that is less important than any other job.

“We have said we want our frontline people trained, and the housekeeper is one of those people….it is more important than the jobs behind the scenes,” he explained.
