Insider rankings: Warren Central, New Palestine and Bishop Chatard still head of the class

Each week of the high school football season, I will rank the top high school football teams in Central Indiana by class. Here is how it shakes out after the fourth week of the season:

Class 6A Top 10

1. Warren Central (5-0): The Warriors are making this look remarkably easy. The latest win — a 70-27 drubbing of defending state champion Ben Davis — has Warren Central at 5-0 for the first time in four years. Jayden George has passed for 1,234 yards and 17 touchdowns already. Next up: At Pike. Previous: 1.

2.  Brownsburg (5-0): The Bulldogs overcame three turnovers to beat Fishers 27-20 and stay unbeaten as Donny Marcus rolled up 255 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Brownsburg hosts Westfield on Friday. Previous: 2.

3. Avon (4-1): Sampson James rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries as Avon trounced Franklin Central 48-0 to bounce back from the loss to Brownsburg. Up next is a visit from Fishers. Previous: 3.

4. Carmel (4-1): Lawrence North managed just 33 rushing yards in Carmel’s 23-9 win. The Greyhounds are at North Central on Friday. Previous: 5.

5. North Central (4-1): After a 26-14 win over Center Grove, the Panthers have a legitimate shot at their first winning season since 2006. The last win over Carmel — this week’s opponent at home — came in 2005. Previous: 7.

6. Center Grove (2-3): After back-to-back wins over Carmel and Ben Davis, the Trojans dropped a 26-14 decision to North Central. Four turnovers (North Central had zero) hurt Center Grove’s chances. Up next is a home game against Lawrence Central. Previous: 4.

7. Ben Davis (2-3): The Giants must get over last week’s 70-27 loss to Warren Central as quickly as possible. Friday’s home game against Lawrence North will be a tough one. Previous: 6.

8. Lawrence Central (2-3): The Bears rebounded from a loss to Warren Central with a resounding 34-7 win over Pike. John Lewis passed for 262 yards and rushed for 58 yards in the win. The next four games — at Center Grove, North Central, at Ben Davis, at Carmel — aren't easy. Previous: NR.

9. Westfield (3-2): The Shamrocks notched a 34-27 win over Hamilton Southeastern. Camden Simons passed for 229 yards. Westfield is at Brownsburg on Friday, followed by a home game vs. Avon. Previous: NR.

10. Lawrence North (2-3): Donaven McCulley was 17-for-34 for 214 yards passing in Lawrence North’s 23-9 loss to Carmel. The Wildcats look to end a nine-game losing streak to Ben Davis (at Ben Davis) on Friday. Previous: 9.

Dropped out: Southport (8), Hamilton Southeastern (10)

Class 5A Top 3

1.  New Palestine (5-0): New Pal got its toughest test of the season to date in a 42-21 win over Pendleton Heights in a game that was just 13-7 at halftime. Charlie Spegal rushed for 258 yards and four touchdowns. The Dragons host 0-5 Greenfield-Central on Friday. Previous: 1.

2. Martinsville (5-0): The Artesians stayed unbeaten with a 30-7 win over Franklin. Travis Griffey passed for 229 yards and rushed for 90 yards and two TDs. Whiteland visits Martinsville on Friday. Previous: 2.

3. Decatur Central (4-1): The Hawks handed Mooresville its first loss, 38-28. Quarterback Parker Harrington rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns. A road game at Plainfield is next. Previous: 3.

Class 4A Top 3

1. Pendleton Heights (4-1): The Arabians gave New Palestine all it could handle for most of the game in a 42-21 loss. Christian Conkling passed for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Pendleton Heights hosts Mt. Vernon this week. Previous: 1.

2. Mooresville (4-1): The Pioneers saw their undefeated run end with a 38-28 loss to Decatur Central. Mooresville hosts Franklin on Friday. Previous: 2.

3. Beech Grove (4-1): Keyonni Johnson intercepted two passes to run his season total to four in Beech Grove’s 58-14 win over Brown County. The Hornets host 4-1 Monrovia on Friday. Previous: 3.

Class 3A Top 3

1. Bishop Chatard (5-0): The Trojans posted a fifth consecutive strong performance with a 45-26 win over Southport. Daylen Taylor rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Chatard hosts Guerin Catholic on Friday. Previous: 1.

2. Guerin Catholic (4-1): Guerin held Columbus North to 54 rushing yards in a 17-10 win on Friday. The Golden Eagles are at Chatard on Friday and looking for a fifth consecutive victory. Previous: 3.

3. Brebeuf Jesuit (3-2): The Braves shut down Culver Academy in a 17-7 win. Brebeuf will hosts Roncalli on Friday. Previous: 2.

Class 2A/A Top 3

1. Western Boone (5-0): The Stars gave up their season-high in points on the season but it did not matter much in a 60-14 win over North Montgomery. Western Boone is at Frankfort on Friday. Previous: 2.

2. Scecina (4-1): David Baker caught 10 passes for 115 yards in Scecina’s 38-28 loss to Roncalli. The Crusaders will play Lutheran on Friday at Manual. Previous: 1.

3. Triton Central (5-0): The Tigers continued to roll with a 35-14 win over Indian Creek. Triton Central faces Cardinal Ritter on Friday at Marian. Previous: 3.
