Woman struck and killed by passing freight train in Johnston County

A woman was killed early Friday by a passing freight train when her powered wheelchair apparently stopped on the tracks, authorities said.

KENLY, N.C. — A woman was killed early Friday by a passing freight train when her motorized wheelchair apparently stopped on the tracks, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on train tracks located on West Second Street in Kenly, police said. The victim's identity was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the northbound CSX train struck the woman as she was attempting to cross the tracks while returning home in her motorized wheelchair.

The incident prompted authorities to halt the CSX train, which was traveling from Florence, S.C., to Richmond, Va., for nearly three hours while they investigated the fatal accident.

Police have not publicly said if charges will be filed in connection with the incident.

They did not release the identify of the woman. Authorities were working Friday to notify her family.
