Mumbai: In a groundbreaking development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully launched a massive 25,000-ton girder connecting the south-bound corridor of the coastal road to the iconic Bandra Worli Sea Link on Friday. This significant engineering achievement marks a historic milestone in India's infrastructure landscape.
The BMC, in a press release, announced that the process to launch the bow-string-arch-type girder, spanning an impressive 136 metres, commenced at 2:00 am at Worli and concluded at 3:25 am. This pioneering engineering feat is the first of its kind in India to involve such a monumental installation over the sea.
The newly installed girder, measuring between 18 to 21 metres wide, will serve to bridge the 10.5-kilometre stretch of the coastal road to the Bandra-Worli sea link, thereby enhancing connectivity and accessibility for commuters.
Although the southbound corridor of the coastal road between Worli and Marine Lines was opened for traffic on March 11 this year, it had remained unconnected to the sea link until now.
Furthermore, the BMC disclosed plans for the installation of another 143-metre long, 26-29 metre wide girder for the coastal road's northbound corridor, which has already arrived at Nhava Sheva port. Its launch is slated for the end of May, with transportation arrangements to be finalised subsequent to the successful launch of the first girder.
These girders, coated with anti-rust colours to withstand exposure to saline water and humidity, are being installed to ensure smooth passage for fishing boats off the Worli coast, thereby minimising disruptions to maritime activities.
With the success of this first-of-its-kind experiment in India, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation added a new feather in its cap.
