A look at the Norfolk Tides as they return home and begin a six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers, the top affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, who have won the National League East in every season from 2018-23 and the World Series in ’21.
Norfolk’s record: 9-12
New in town: Catcher David Banuelos, 27, surely hopes for more action. The former Long Beach State player was 3 for 11 with a homer and two RBIs in two games for Norfolk, then was called up to Baltimore on April 16. He flew out to right field as a pinch hitter that day in his major league debut. It turned out to be his only at-bat with the Orioles, who reassigned him to the Tides three days later. Originally drafted by Seattle in 2017, he signed with Baltimore as a minor league free agent last December.
In the Gwinnett dugout: The pitching staff of the Stripers (9-11) is filled with guys who have seen recent spot duty with Atlanta, such as Dylan Dodd, AJ Smith-Shawver, Jackson Stephens, Allan Winans, Huascar Ynoa and Darius Vines, who started for the Braves in Sunday night’s loss to Texas. It also has Ken Giles, 33, a former closer for Houston and Philadelphia who only has pitched in nine major league games since 2020.
