A Liverpool institution has claimed the top spot on TripAdvisor.

Anfield Stadium currently holds the number one spot in a roundup of the top attractions in Liverpool.

The stadium, which is home to Liverpool FC, has beaten out the likes of the Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool Cathedral, a host of museums and more to be crowned number one.

Anfield stadium is steeped in history, with commemorative nods to the past including a statue of legendary manager Bill Shankly outside the stadium.

Next to the Shankly Gates is the memorial to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster - its centrepiece an eternal flame.

Anfield Stadium is open to visitors during the day when no games are scheduled. Visitors are led around the space by guides with the museum and stadium tour offering Liverpool fans - and sports enthusiasts alike - behind-the-scenes access to the iconic club.

It boasts more than 7,000 reviews on TripAdvisor, 6,000 of which have scored it a coveted five stars, with a further 900 scoring it four stars.

Just this month, TripAdvisor user Chris scored the stadium top marks and penned: "Knowledgeable staff, tour guides were friendly and clearly Liverpool fans. Our group had people from France, Italy London and China."

Pippa said: "The Stadium tour was excellent and staff passionate about their team. A truly magic afternoon out for my husband and myself. Would do it again."

Another reviewer commented: "I am not a football fan, took my granddaughter, who loved everything. I enjoyed it also. The tour guides very helpful and friendly. For me the memorial to the 96 victims was very [moving], reading the names etc, I must admit I shed a tear. Well worth the money, and yes I would go again".
