Amazon delivery station could bring same-day, next-day delivery to central Iowa
Attention, central Iowa shoppers!
If you make purchases on Amazon, you can expect same-day or next-day delivery starting in March 2020.
Amazon Logistics announced Wednesday that it will open an Iowa delivery station in Grimes. The company plans to move into a Hubbell warehouse at 1301 SE Gateway Drive.
According to Amazon, delivery stations supplement Amazon's delivery capabilities to support the growing volume of customer orders.
"Amazon will release 20 vans at a time in half-hour increments," Grimes City Administrator Jake Anderson said.
In Bondurant, construction is underway for Project Bluejay -- a warehouse speculated to be an Amazon fulfillment center.
Amazon has yet to confirm it is behind the project, but it is rumored that Amazon orders will be fulfilled at a warehouse in Bondurant before being shipped out of the Grimes location.
Grimes city leaders said they expect the project to create several hundred part-time and full-time jobs.
"An exciting aspect of having Amazon in the community is that they have got a $15-an-hour minimum wage," Anderson said.
The delivery station in Grimes is expected to be completed by 2020.
Grimes Mayor Scott Mikkelsen said in a statement: "Amazon's investment in Grimes creates a wave of excitement within the economic development sector in Grimes and central Iowa.
"The confidence Amazon has shown in our city and region directly correlates with our ability to provide a top-quality workplace and living environment."
