While the threat of a strike by 1,125 workers at the Port of Montreal is still brewing, Port Authority CEO Sylvie Vachon hopes the parties can reach agreement.
The maritime employers are under the umbrella of the Maritime Employers Association.
The union, attached to the Canadian Union of Public Employees, had agreed to an unlimited general strike mandate last December.

Given the strategic and economic importance of the port, it is necessary to determine the essential services to be maintained in the event of a strike, the Canada Industrial Relations Board said.
The board began its hearings on essential services on Feb. 4, and they have yet to be completed.
Asked about the chance of a strike during an announcement about the Contrecoeur terminal, Vachon said any disruption of regular port activities would affect exporters and importers.
Vachon said she hopes the parties will come to an agreement soon.
