Kalama port requests $2.2M for pedestrian overpass

Current structure built in 1973, not ADA accessible

LONGVIEW — The Port of Kalama is hoping to improve access between the waterfront and downtown by building a $4.4 million replacement for its aging pedestrian bridge and is asking the state to cover half the price.

Executive Director Mark Wilson sent a $2.2 million State Capital Fund request Thursday to District 20 state Rep. Richard DeBolt.

The current pedestrian overpass linking West Frontage Road and North Hendrickson Drive was built in 1973 and is not ADA accessible, said Liz Newman, marketing and communications manager.

Newman said the port has been working with the City of Kalama for several years to better connect the downtown to waterfront recreational facilities and pathways. A new and improved overpass would accomplish that, she said.

“Our vision for a healthy community includes providing a balance of industrial, commercial and recreational activities,” she said. “We believe greater access between the downtown core and waterfront will enhance the livability of the community and those who visit here.”

The replacement bridge would be in the same location to stay within an easement from the BNSF Railway, she said. Limited space requires the bridge to use stairs and elevators on both sides, rather than ramps or another solution.

The port’s request states that new developments — including McMenamins — have increased the number of visitors to the waterfront, and the bridge would help improve economic activity to downtown by improving access.

The plan also proposes spending $1.5 million to add about 100 parking spaces to the area along West Frontage.
