US Postal Service might be your best bet for quick shipping

Holiday shoppers still looking for the best price when shipping their presents to loved ones shouldn’t look past the US Postal Service.

The USPS was the best choice for next-day delivery in 73 percent of the cases — and in 87 percent of the cases when needing just three-day delivery, according to a recent survey.

When it comes to two-day delivery, FedEx was the least expensive 97 percent of the time, according to the survey by Consumer Reports, which looked at the USPS, FedEx and UPS.

The USPS, however, was just a dollar more expensive in most cases.

The consumer group compared rates and service for delivery between 30 pairs of cities for a 5-pound, medium-size package.

Consumer Reports reminded consumers to always shop around for the best price.

The group’s findings include:

  •  UPS had the lowest prices in only 3 percent of the cases for second-day delivery.
  •  FedEx had the best deal in only 27 percent of the 30 trials for overnight delivery and in just 13 percent of the cases for third-day delivery.
  •  All three couriers deliver to almost every address in the US, and they can get your parcels to more than 200 countries and territories.

“The Postal Service doesn’t have surcharges like other shipping companies,” a spokesman said. “We don’t do surcharges for Saturday delivery, don’t have fuel surcharges and don’t have holiday-season surcharges.”
