St. Henry's Area School is one of 21 schools around the state that is participating in this year's Science Matters program, a partnership between the Science Museum of Minnesota and Flint Hills Resources. As part of Science Matters, 103 students at St. Henry's Area School will participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations designed to enrich their interest in science through the Science Museum's interactive assembly program.
Science Matters strives to bring science to life for students from all over the state, including those who cannot easily access the museum and its world-class resources. Since 2004, Flint Hills Resources has sponsored the Science Matters program for hundreds of thousands of students from across Minnesota. Each Science Matters school receives an assembly at its school from Science Museum presenters as well as a sleepover at the museum in Saint Paul.
Instructors from the Science Museum of Minnesota will present Science Matters assemblies at St. Henry's Area School on March 27 at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Through a visual and interactive presentation on dinosaurs, students in kindergarten, first, and second grades will learn how scientists compare the physical features left behind by dinosaurs in fossils to the animals we know today. These students will uncover fossils from the past and assemble a life-size dinosaur skeleton puzzle.
Students in grades 3-5 will explore what engineers do, what inspires them, and why it is important. These students will investigate how engineers use the design cycle as they approach problems affecting people in today's world.
The second part of the Science Matters program includes a "Camp-In" sleepover at the Science Museum of Minnesota. On March 15, students from St. Henry's Area School traveled to Saint Paul for a memorable opportunity to explore the magic of science through a unique overnight experience. Now in its 32nd year, the Camp-In program is one of the longest-standing museum sleepover programs in the nation.
