The terminals based in the north-western Latvian port of Ventspils reloaded 1.1 million tons of cargo in October this year, and the cargo turnover in the first ten months of 2017 totaled 17.3 million tons, which is by 1.8 million tons or 12% more than in the same period last year, the port informed LETA.

Handling of coal and cargos carried by ferries showed the biggest growth year-on-year.

The amount of both ro-ro cargos and passengers carried by Stena Line ferry operator keeps growing. The number of passengers travelling on the Ventspils-Nynashamn (Sweden) route in January-October this year increased by 36,147 people or 26% year-on-year. The amount of ro-ro cargos grew by 264,000 tons or 17% compared to the ten-month period in 2016.

In the first ten months of this year, cargo turnover grew year-on-year at most of the terminals in the Ventspils port but some of them have been suffering a decline in cargo handling for quite a while. The lowest cargo turnover again was recorded for Kalija Parks which handled 188,000 tons in the first ten months of 2017, operating at just 3% of its actual capacity.

Investments in development of the port infrastructure will continue also this year as it is one of the priorities of the authority of the Ventspils freeport, the port said.
