Chinese entrepreneurs interested in cooperation with Riga port in container shipping, logistics

Chinese entrepreneurs are interested in cooperation with Riga port mostly in container shipping, cargo handling and logistics, the port’s representatives told LETA after a Chinese business delegation’s visit to the port.

The port’s representatives said that the Chinese businesspeople were more interested in possibilities of investing in the already operating terminals rather than new terminal and logistics projects.

 

During their visit to the port, the Chinese entrepreneurs showed interest in Riga port’s general development, performance results, future prospects and the geopolitical situation, as well as the EU-Russia sanctions’ impact on the port’s operations.

 

The visit took place as part of a business forum, Riga was hosting in the China-Eastern and Central Europe (16+1) cooperation format.

 

The Chinese delegation touring the port of Riga included representatives of companies like China Harbour Engineering Company, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd., China Merchants Holding (International) Co, Ltd., Zhengzhou International Hub Development and Construction Co.,Ltd., China Railway Container Transport Co. and China Railway.

 

Representing companies based in the Freeport of Riga were Rigas Universalais Terminals, Baltic Container Terminal, Systems Terminal, NKT, Frigo Terminal and TFS Trans.

 

Representatives of the Freeport of Riga Authority informed the Chinese entrepreneurs about the port’s other investment projects and the territories that have been earmarked for future development.

 

The 16+1 business conference was taking place in Riga on Tuesday to discuss the need for continued development of innovative, sustainable, efficient and safe multi-modal supply chain solutions, transport corridors and routes linking Asia and Europe to satisfy the growing trade.

 

The business conference follows a meeting of 16+1 transport ministers that took place in Riga on Monday, May 16.

 

The China and Central-Eastern European countries cooperation formal (16+ 1) promotes cooperation between China and 16 European countries – the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina – in different areas, including transport.
